The Story of Fascial Deep Tissue Massage

Fascial deep tissue massage is the result of a profound integration of various massage and body therapy techniques, refined and developed over decades. The heart of this method is working with the fascia — an extensive network of connective tissue that surrounds and connects all muscles, organs, and nerves in the body.

A key inspiration for the development of fascial deep tissue massage came from the Esalen Massage, which in the 1960s and 1970s at Esalen-Institut which originated in California. Esalen massage is characterized by long, flowing strokes, mindfulness, and a holistic understanding of the body. It incorporates elements from various traditional massage styles, such as Schwedischen Massage, but also techniques from Somatic Therapy and Somatic Experiencing. These techniques aim to treat the body as a whole, addressing both physical and emotional blockages.

Norbert Wehry, one of the pioneers of fascial bodywork, adopted and further developed these principles. In addition to Californian massage, he was also inspired by other methods, particularly Rolfing, a deep connective tissue work developed by Dr. Ida Rolf. Rolfing aims to realign the body and release adhesions in the fascia to improve mobility and reduce pain. These techniques greatly influenced Wehry’s understanding of the central role of fascia in the body.

In addition also Myofascial release techniques played a role in shaping fascial deep tissue massage, focusing on easing fascial tension and treating trigger points. Influences from deep tissue massagewere also significant, with its slow, deep strokes and targeted pressure on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue.

Wehry also drew inspiration from Osteopathieparticularly fascial osteopathy, which views the body as an interconnected system and uses gentle manipulations to restore balance to the tissue structures. Elements from traditionellen fernöstlichen Medizin, such as Shiatsu and Acupressure, complemented his techniques, providing tools to release energetic tensions in the body

Through the integration of all these approaches, fascial deep tissue massage has developed into a complete therapy that not only eases physical tension and adhesions in the fascia but also stimulates the body’s natural self-healing and fosters profound relaxation. It embodies a synthesis of traditional and modern techniques, all designed to enhance overall well-being.

My teacher, Frali VennerMy teacher, Frali Venner, assisted Norbert Wehry for many years and later further developed the technique. She shares the knowledge gained from over 30 years of bodywork with her whole being. www.massieren-lernen-berlin.de

I am deeply grateful for my teachers and the ones before them and honor them beyond words.
